Arias hunde a su ex jefe Eliú |

Usando un overol
anaranjado, típico uniforme de una prisión, zapatos deportivos y
un brazalete de identificación, Sabbas David Arias ingresó ayer
al salón de la Corte, a las 9:57 de la mañana, por la entrada
izquierda, la misma que había usado media hora antes el ex
diputado suplente salvadoreño Eliú Martínez.
Desde su silla en la mesa de la defensa, el acusado de
conspiración para introducir cocaína a Estados Unidos observaba
con una mirada penetrante al que hacía cinco años había sido su
empleado. Con la mano izquierda en la barbilla, los lentes en la
punta de la nariz y, de vez en cuando, anotando cosas en una
libreta, Eliú escuchó atentamente las declaraciones que lo
vincularon —sin escapatoria— a la dama blanca (cocaína).
Sabbas explicó que conoció a Martínez, quien se presentó como el
“licenciado Ricardo”, entre agosto y noviembre de 1998 en el
club de pesca de Jaltepeque, cuando el imputado llegó con unos
amigos a comprar una embarcación.
En 1999, Eliú pidió a Sabbas que preparara dos embarcaciones,
las Pamelas I y II, con combustible, aceite y comida para llevar
a un grupo de sus amigos de pesca. En el grupo se encontraba
Otto Herrera, conocido por Arias como “el Ingeniero”, además de
otras dos personas de Colombia y Venezuela, conocidas por el
lanchero como “Willy” y “Rodrigo”.
Sabbas dijo que en alta mar encontraron un barco que se acercó y
les entregó una carga, empacada en pacas (sacos), en las que
había dentro unos 36 cuadros en forma de ladrillos.
Cuando regresaron al rancho Cuatro Vientos, Eliú tenía listo un
remolque para llevar las lanchas al hangar. El ex diputado del
PAN ayudó a llevar la carga a la bodega. Esa noche, portaba una
pistola 9 milímetros, según dijo el testigo. Al día siguiente,
el ahora acusado llegó al rancho para revisar que Sabbas hubiera
lavado las embarcaciones. Ahí, confesó al testigo que lo que
transportaban era droga.
“Me dijo que era cocaína. Que ‘cualquier persona que sepa de
esto será porque usted le ha contado y eso cuesta muy caro.
Usted y su familia podrían perder la vida por eso’”, afirmó
Sabbas, quien en el estrado mantenía entrelazadas las manos y
bajaba la vista con frecuencia.
Él aseguró también haber participado en seis viajes en los que
se trasladaron varios kilos de estupefacientes, de alta mar a la
costa; sin embargo, solo le pagaron cuatro. El último viaje en
el que participó fue el 7 de junio de 2000.
Arias, que llegó a Estados Unidos el pasado 24 de mayo para
testificar contra Eliú Martínez, también dijo que durante una de
las operaciones, efectuada en mayo de 2000, el ex diputado fue
personalmente a recoger la droga en el mar.
“Las seis veces, (Eliú) era el que salía antes que la carga. Él
supervisaba que no hubiera policías en la carretera”, aseguró
Sabbas, quien enfocó su mirada en el acusado en escasos minutos
durante las casi cuatro horas en las que declaró.
El semblante de Eliú, que se había mantenido sereno, fue
cambiando a medida que escuchaba las declaraciones de Arias. En
el receso, con cara angustiada, oía las palabras de su defensora
adjunta, Lara Quint.
Eliú y Sabbas compartieron el mismo espacio durante casi la
mayor parte de la mañana y tarde, pero nunca intercambiaron
palabra. En los recesos, mientras Arias salía por la puerta
izquierda al cuarto de los detenidos que está detrás de la
Corte, Martínez permanecía en la mesa de la defensa, hablando
con alguno de sus abogados.

Sabbas pidió visas de EUA para su familia
Sabbas Arias estaba acusado de dos delitos por tráfico
internacional de drogas en Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, ayer,
cuando se presentó a dar su declaración, lo hizo en calidad de
testigo.
La Fiscalía estadounidense lo absolvió de los cargos el pasado 2
de junio, bajo condición de que se presentara a declarar sobre
su asociación con Eliú Martínez en el trasiego de drogas. Arias
dijo que le habían explicado que ya no sería procesado en
Estados Unidos, pero que no conocía cuál podría ser su pena de
ser condenado en este país.
Además de esto, pidió a miembros de la Agencia Antinarcóticos de
EUA (DEA) que le ayudaran a tramitar visas para que su familia
pudiera ingresar a Estados Unidos en su tránsito hacia otro país.
“No es para venir acá, es para viajar a otro país y solo para
eso la quiero”, dijo el testigo al abogado defensor Shawn Moore,
luego de negarse a detallar en qué lugar se encuentra su familia.
Por sus declaraciones ante el jurado, también pidió una
notificación de la Fiscalía estadounidense en que se hiciera
constar que había sido testigo en el caso.
Audazmente, Sabbas evadió varias preguntas de Moore sobre el
convenio que firmó con la Fiscalía estadounidense en El Salvador
en abril de 2005.
“¿Sabía usted que si era condenado por los cargos iría a prisión
en EUA?”, preguntó Moore. “Pero como ya me están juzgando en mi
país no me pueden juzgar aquí porque no hay tratado de
extradición”, contestó el testigo.

El empleado busca salirse de la organización
Sabbas intentó varias maneras de dejar de trabajar para el
narcodiputado en el año 2000. Organizó complots sin mayor éxito.
“Quería buscar un motivo para que me despidieran”, dijo Sabbas
Arias al fiscal Michael Mota, explicando que desde abril de 2000
“ya no estaba de acuerdo con lo que se estaba haciendo y estaba
buscando alternativas para salir del problema”.
El testigo explicó que él y un amigo suyo llamado Samuel (ya
fallecido) arruinaron una de las lanchas de Martínez para que
este encontrara motivo y los despidiera.
“Cuando regresó, estaba tan enojado que disparó hacia la tierra
cerca de mis pies y dijo que lo teníamos que pagar”, aseguró
Arias, quien derramó varias lágrimas al recordar a su amigo.
Por ese incidente, narró, ya no le pagaron su participación en
el viaje anterior; y en el siguiente viaje solo le dieron 10 mil
colones. Por su primer traslado de cocaína había recibió 50 mil
colones, además del salario de 3 mil colones mensuales por darle
mantenimiento a las embarcaciones de Martínez.
“Desde el momento en que dañé la embarcación, en abril de 2000,
ya no me interesaba el trabajo y empecé un complot para salir”,
dijo. Por eso, el 20 de junio aseguró haber hecho una llamada a
la Policía salvadoreña para que detuvieran uno de los botes de
Eliú. Sin embargo, en esa ocasión las autoridades no detuvieron
a su patrón.
La defensa intentó desacreditar a Arias haciendo referencia a la
primera declaración que rindió ante las autoridades
estadounidenses y salvadoreñas, en la que dijo que había buscado
salir de la organización porque no le habían pagado, no porque
se sintiera culpable de sus acciones, como atestiguó ayer.
